Adult and Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury: Projecting Future Needs for the Challenging Case

This one-day post conference will feature multiple medical and neuropsychological presenters who
will address brain injury cases that challenge life care planners in projecting future long term needs.  Consider the following cases:

  • The mild to moderate traumatic brain injury in the child who is 3 or younger: how do you
project their long-term needs particularly into their adulthood years?
  • The young adult with a traumatic brain injury who has relatively preserved neuromotor
functioning (near normal outward appearance) yet may have significant executive functioning
and behavioral issues affecting independent living?
  • The adult with traumatic brain injury with significant physical limitations yet on a cognitive
and behavioral level is functioning on a near-normal level: how do you project for their future personal care needs?
  • Life care plan projections for future complications of traumatic brain injury, such as late
onset seizures and progressive dementing conditions

Presenters: David Altman, MD Neurologist , Dr. Richard Fulbright, PhD
Neuropsychologist,Paul Kornberg, MD PM&R, Ronald Savage, Ed.D

Life Care Planning Summit 2000 - 2010
Workgroup for Statement Modification: Review of Historical Relevance
and Collaborating to Ensure Relevance to the Life Care Planning Field

Presenters/Facilitators:  Debra Berens, Cloie Johnson, Jamie Pomeranz
and Karen Preston (Additional Task Force Members to be determined)

In follow up of the Life Care Planning Summit 2010 held in Atlanta, GA, the Summit attendees
completed a review of past consensus statements and majority-view statements for continued
support, modification, or deletion. One of the outcomes of the Summit was the formation of a
workgroup to ensure that consensus statements and majority-view statements, which are
published and form expectations for life care planning practice, are accurate, relevant, and
appropriate.

At the ISLCP Post Con, the attendees will:
 review and understand
the proceedings of the past 5 Summits,
the process utilized in the past 5 Summits,
the outcome consensus statements and majority-view statements
create a methodological design of the analysis of the relevancy of the Summit statements requiring modification as noted by the Life Care Planning Summit 2010, and
present plan of action to modify the statements noted by the Life Care Planning Summit 2010 to be continued as necessary by the Task Force.
Time permitting, implementation of the process and design to begin analysis of the relevancy of
the Summit statements requiring modification.
